Long ago, the lush green Valley of Peshawar, to the northeast of the city and bordered by the Swat Hills, was the home of a great civilization. Although little remains to indicate the former magnificence of Gandhara, it is always exciting to stand on the mound where the "Lotus City" once flourished and imagine yourself traveling back through time to 260 B.C., as a pilgrim reading the edicts of Ashoka or as a Buddhist monk at Takht Bhai.
